In the heart of Apulian spring, Conversano is enveloped in silence, prayer and emotion. Holy Week, celebrated with great spiritual intensity and widespread public participation, is one of the most profound and evocative times of the year for the community of Conversano.
A ritual that unites faith and community
One of the most eagerly awaited rituals is the traditional “Visitation of the Holy Sepulchres” on Maundy Thursday, during which worshippers and visitors make their way from church to church, immersed in a solemn atmosphere characterised by soft lighting, meaningful silences and ancient symbolism.
The climax comes on Good Friday, with the Procession of the Passion, in which the statues of the dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows are carried through the streets of the historic centre, borne on the shoulders of the bearers to the poignant strains of funeral marches and amidst the solemn reverence of the people. The lights dim, voices grow soft, and the whole city is transformed into a vast open-air spiritual theatre.
