A small rural gem
Church of Saint Catherine
Unique architecture, immersed in the silent landscapes of the Apulian countryside
Just 1 km from the historic center of Conversano, along the panoramic road leading to the port of San Vito, stands the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most fascinating rural churches in the area.
A rare example of quadrilobed architecture

This small sacred building, immersed in the quiet of the countryside, is striking for its quadrilobed plan, an extremely rare architectural form in Apulia that recalls Byzantine-inspired models, with four semicircular apses joined at the corners.
A harmonious combination of Apulian Romanesque and Oriental style that makes it a unique place.
Origini misteriose e leggende locali
The origins of the church remain shrouded in mystery and are the subject of two main hypotheses:

- Some scholars believe that it was built around the mid-11th century, a period in which the cult of Saint Catherine of Alexandria also spread in Apulia.
- Others link it to the figure of Count Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, who is said to have wished to build the church after 1456 in homage to his consort Caterina Orsini Del Balzo.
Both hypotheses contribute to the charm of the church, enveloped in historical and devotional suggestions.
An essential and meaningful interior
The interior of the Church of Saint Catherine appears essential yet full of spirituality. The bare walls and the absence of elaborate decorations create an intimate and quiet atmosphere, perfect for meditation.

Among the few decorative elements, the following stand out:
- Two paintings of strong symbolic value: one depicting Saint Catherine and the other the Madonna of the Fountain, patroness of Conversano;
- A simple stone altar.
