In the “Laghi di Conversano e Gravina di Monsignore” Nature Reserve, you don’t just pass through nature – you experience it: every trail is an invitation to slow down, breathe and observe.
Embarking on these itineraries means allowing yourself to be captivated by the understated charm of unspoilt rural settings, where human presence blends harmoniously with that of nature. The dirt tracks, dry-stone walls, cultivated fields and shady copses paint a picture of an authentic landscape, perfect for those seeking genuine and sustainable experiences.

Path of the Karst Lakes of Conversano
A circular route connecting the main temporary ponds of the reserve, passing through scenic viewpoints and habitats rich in flora and fauna.
Woman walking Length: Around 7 km
⏱️ Duration 2–2.5 hours
🟢 Difficulty: Easy
📍 Recommended departure: Lago Castiglione area (accessible by car)

Points of interest
Wildlife along the route:
Seasonal karst lakes such as Lake Castiglione, Lake Sassano and Lake San Vito – habitats rich in biodiversity – where you can spot amphibians, migratory birds and wild plants such as wild orchids.

Along the route, you can spot small creatures that live around the edges of the lakes, such as dragonflies, frogs and small reptiles.

Thanks to the terrain, the trail also offers some particularly photogenic views, ideal for nature photographers and for those who enjoy sharing their experiences whilst taking in the landscape.
2. Walk to the Monsignore Ravine
A linear route that winds its way along the most scenic ravine in the area, amongst limestone cliffs, the remains of ancient rock-cut settlements and spectacular viewpoints.
🚶 Length: around 5 km (as the crow flies)
⏱️ Duration 1.5 hours
🟡 Difficulty: media
⚠️ Suggested nature guide for a more complete and safe experience

Ideal for:
Hiking, birdwatching, nature photography and observing local wildlife, including herons, white storks and kestrels.

The walk is also a journey through time, thanks to the ancient rock-cut settlements, caves and paths carved into the rock, which tell forgotten stories of shepherds, wayfarers and rural communities.

The cliffs of the ravine form an extraordinary ecosystem for birds to nest in and offer truly breathtaking views, especially during the golden hours of sunset.
Nature and wildlife to discover
The reserve is a true paradise for nature observation enthusiasts.
- Birdwatching: herons, black-winged stilts, kestrels, storks (especially in spring and autumn), hoopoes, scops owls and barn owls
- Characteristic flora: mastic, arbutus, holm oak, phillyrea, heather, and, in spring, a profusion of wild orchids
- Mammals: foxes, porcupines, hedgehogs, badgers and small rodents. In some areas, you may also find traces of nocturnal animals such as owls and little owls
The best times of year for birdwatching are spring and early autumn, when biodiversity bursts into life in all its colourful and melodious splendour.
