An ancient stronghold between millennia of history and lush nature
Castiglione Tower
On the hills of Conversano, a solitary tower tells of centuries of civilisation and resistance
Just 5 kilometres from Conversano, nestled in the lush green heart of the “Laghi di Conversano e Gravina di Monsignore” Nature Reserve, stands the picturesque Torre di Castiglione: one of the area’s most fascinating historical landmarks.
A place where history meets the landscape
Perched atop a hill, the tower is surrounded by holm oaks, downy oaks and centuries-old olive trees, offering breathtaking views and an atmosphere that takes you back in time.
The site takes its name from the watchtower, which is still visible today; it is 13 metres high and was built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries for defensive purposes. The entrance, which is no longer accessible in its original form, was once situated 5 metres above ground level and could only be reached via a drawbridge: a clear indication of the building’s military function.
A past that sinks into antiquity
The hill of Castiglione bears traces of human settlements dating back to much earlier times. Between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, in pre-Roman times, the area was home to a fortified village, protected by a polygonal stone wall. Its strategic position and the presence of fresh water made Castiglione a focal point for local communities.
In the Middle Ages, between the 14th and 15th centuries, a new fortified village was established, complete with defensive walls and a church featuring a burial chapel, which served as the spiritual centre of the community. It was here, during the 1998 excavations, that an important burial site was discovered, probably belonging to a knight, which further enhances the site’s historical significance.

Nature and archaeology in a single experience
The Tower of Castiglione is not just an archaeological site, but also an ideal spot for those who love nature, hiking and walks in the tranquillity of the woods. The site is situated along one of the most beautiful routes linking Conversano to the Itria Valley, and is also perfect for cycle tourists and photographers.
Along the signposted trails, glimpses of ancient ruins alternate with panoramic views, making every visit a well-rounded experience that combines contemplation of the past with immersion in the reserve’s biodiversity.
