Nature Reserve of the Lakes of Conversano
The green heart of Puglian biodiversity
Nestled amongst rolling hills and rural landscapes, the “Laghi di Conversano e Gravina di Monsignore” Nature Reserve is one of the most fascinating natural wonders in the south-east of the province of Bari.
A landscape that changes with the seasons
Just a few kilometres from the town centre, the area is home to 10 temporary ponds – small bodies of water that form in winter thanks to the rain and last until summer, creating an ever-changing landscape teeming with life.
These lakes – which are actually karst sinkholes – collect rainwater on impermeable clay soils, giving rise to a rare and precious Mediterranean ecosystem. The name “lakes” has its roots in local medieval tradition.
Of these, Lake San Vito is the most important and best known: situated near the road of the same name, it is the largest and most easily accessible, and is often used as a starting point for walks and nature-based activities.
The reserve stretches amongst centuries-old olive groves, orchards, historic farmhouses, trulli and dry stone walls, in a setting that combines natural beauty, rural culture and environmental value.

The area is a haven for rare and endemic plant species and for a wide variety of animals:

Recommended route
You can explore the entire lake system on a route of around 49 km, ideal for those who enjoy walking or cycling in the countryside, amidst the landscapes of the Murgia and sites that bear witness to the region’s agricultural history.
