A unique ecosystem immersed in nature
Natural Reserve of the Lakes of Conversano
The green heart of Apulian biodiversity
Nestled among gentle hills and rural landscapes, the Oriented Natural Reserve “Lakes of Conversano and Gravina di Monsignore” is one of the most fascinating natural wonders of southeastern Bari.
A landscape that changes with the seasons
A few kilometers from the city center, the area hosts 10 temporary ponds, small bodies of water that form in winter thanks to rainfall and last until summer, creating a changing and vibrant landscape.
These lakes, actually karst-origin sinkholes, collect rainwater on impermeable clay soils, creating a rare and valuable Mediterranean ecosystem. The name “lakes” has its roots in the local medieval tradition.
Among these, San Vito Lake is the most important and well-known: located near the road of the same name, it is the largest and most easily accessible, and is often used as a starting point for excursions and nature activities.
The reserve stretches across century-old olive groves, orchards, historic farmhouses, trulli, and dry stone walls, in a setting that combines natural beauty, rural culture, and environmental value.
Biodiversity and wildlife
The area is a refuge for rare and endemic plant species and a wide variety of animals:
🔹 Migratory waterfowl

🔹 Amphibians and reptiles

🔹 Insetti

🔹 Mammiferi

Birdwatching and nature photography enthusiasts will find here an ideal habitat for observations and shots, immersed in the tranquility of nature.
