A millenary rite that unites the city in the spirit of devotion

Patronal Feast of Our Lady of the Fountain

Processions, spirituality, collective emotions: Conversano celebrates its Patroness

Every year, on the third Sunday of May, Conversano comes to a halt to pay homage to its Patroness: Our Lady of the Fountain. It is a moment of great collective participation, intertwining spirituality, civic identity, and centuries-old tradition. The whole city dresses up for the feast, ready to welcome pilgrims, tourists, and devotees from all over the region.

A May of faith, tradition, and community

The celebration has very ancient origins: according to tradition, in 487 A.D. the proto-bishop Simplicius saved the icon of the Madonna from a storm by placing it in a spring of water. Since then, that gesture has become a symbol of protection and rebirth for the entire community. The heart of the feast is the solemn procession that carries the sacred icon through the streets of the old town, amid prayers, silences filled with emotion, and an urban choreography of altars, flowers, and lights.

In addition to the religious rites, the feast is enriched with cultural events, musical performances, stalls, shows, and gatherings, creating an engaging and shared atmosphere that blends the sacred and the profane in an authentic celebration.

What makes the Feast of Our Lady of the Fountain unique?

The Patronal Feast is not only a religious event, but a powerful collective rite that spans the centuries and continues to speak to the hearts of the people of Conversano. It is an occasion to come together as a community, to preserve memory and renew faith.
