A millenary rite that unites the city in the sign of devotion

Patron Festival of Our Lady of the Spring

Processions, spirituality, collective emotions: Conversano celebrates its patron saint

Every year, on the third Sunday in May, Conversano comes to a standstill to pay homage to its patron saint: the Madonna della Fonte. It is a time of great community involvement, blending spirituality, local identity and centuries-old tradition. The whole town is decked out in festive attire, ready to welcome pilgrims, tourists and the faithful from all over the region.

A May of faith, tradition and community

The celebration has ancient origins: according to tradition, in 487 AD, the proto-bishop Simplicio is said to have saved the icon of the Virgin Mary from a storm by placing it in a spring. Since then, that gesture has become a symbol of protection and rebirth for the whole community. At the heart of the festival is the solemn procession that accompanies the sacred icon through the streets of the village, amidst prayers, emotionally charged moments of silence and an urban spectacle featuring altars, flowers and lights.

In addition to religious ceremonies, the festival is enhanced by cultural events, musical interludes, stalls, performances, and gatherings, creating an engaging and shared atmosphere that blends the sacred and the secular in an authentic celebration.

What makes the Festa della Madonna della Fonte unique

The Patron Saint’s Festival is not merely a religious event, but a powerful collective ritual that has spanned the centuries and continues to speak to the hearts of the people of Conversano. It is an opportunity to come together as a community, to preserve our heritage and to renew our faith. The beauty of the rituals, the evocative atmosphere of the night-time procession, the attention to detail and the warmth of the people make this festival a unique experience of shared spirituality.

Every corner of the city bears witness to a legacy that is passed down from generation to generation, embodying the profound values of belonging, gratitude and devotion.
