A journey of faith and tradition in the heart of the village
Holy Week in Conversano
Processions, chants, and symbols of the Passion: the city gathers in a spiritual embrace
In the heart of the Apulian spring, Conversano is clothed in silence, prayer, and emotion. Holy Week, celebrated with deep spiritual intensity and popular participation, is one of the most profound and moving moments of the year for the community of Conversano.
A rite that unites faith and community

Among the most awaited rites is the traditional “Visit to the Sepulchres” on Holy Thursday, during which faithful and visitors move from church to church, accompanied by a rarefied atmosphere made of soft lights, meaningful silences, and ancient symbolism.
The climax is reached on Good Friday with the Procession of the Passion, in which the statues of the Dead Christ and the Sorrowful Virgin are carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic centre, accompanied by the haunting notes of funeral marches and the devotion of the people. The lights grow dim, voices soften, and the entire city transforms into a vast open-air spiritual theatre.
What makes Holy Week unique?
Holy Week in Conversano is not just a religious event: it is a collective representation of identity, a liturgy lived through gestures, a memory renewed each year. Everything, from the black drapes on balconies to the torches lit along the alleys, tells the depth of a tradition that has spanned the centuries.
It is a moment when residents come together, tourists let themselves be drawn in, and the village transforms into a place of living meditation and ancient beauty.
