Millennial Symbol of Conversano

Aragonese Castle

The fortified heart of the city, with Norman towers, noble halls, and masterpieces of art preserved within its walls.

In the heart of Conversano stands the Aragonese Castle, a historic Norman fortress and the undisputed symbol of the city. With its towers, frescoed halls, and art collections, it tells centuries of history, power, and beauty in a single, majestic architectural complex.

A Norman origin among stones and memory

The origins of the castle date back to the 11th century, around 1054, when it was built by the Normans as a military fortress. Its dominant position is no coincidence: the entire structure was erected atop the ancient megalithic walls of the ancient Norba, a pre-Roman city dating back to the 6th–4th century B.C. Even today, it is possible to admire these cyclopean blocks at the base of the Main Tower, the only surviving Norman tower, about 25 meters high and built with regular limestone blocks.

Architecture and Towers: The Defensive Castle That Became a Noble Residence

The Aragonese Castle has a trapezoidal layout, with the four corners oriented toward the cardinal points, each occupied by a tower with unique features.

🔹 Main Tower

Built by the first Norman Count of Conversano, Goffredo Altavilla, it is the original defensive heart of the castle. Massive and austere, it represents the direct link to the Norman era.

🔹 Tower with Gothic Belvedere

Located at the corner opposite the Main Tower, it features elegant pointed-arch windows and a striking panoramic terrace with arches: a rare example of the transition from military to refined architecture.

🔹 Cylindrical Tower

Built in the 15th century by Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, it replaced a quadrangular tower. With its rounded shape and upper battlements, it stands as one of the most recognizable symbols of Conversano. It was also restored in a later period, testifying to the architectural value it has always held.

🔹 Polygonal Tower

Commissioned by Andrea Matteo Acquaviva, son of Giulio Antonio, it has a “batter” structure, with sloped walls designed to withstand artillery fire. It features narrow loopholes and battlements intended for cannon use. Once surrounded by a defensive moat, it is now partially buried.

Monumental Entrance

The current entrance to the Aragonese Castle is located on the south-west side of the building and is today one of the most striking elements of the entire complex. This access, created after the original foundation, replaces the ancient drawbridge that once allowed crossing the defensive moat, now no longer visible as it has been filled in.

The Noble Transformation: The Acquaviva d’Aragona

In the 15th century, the castle gradually ceased to be solely a military fortress and became the noble residence of the powerful Acquaviva d’Aragona family. It was they who transformed the building into an elegant Renaissance residence, expanding its spaces, decorating it with frescoed halls and representative rooms, while still retaining some defensive elements.

Culture, Art, and Exhibitions: The Castle Today

Today the Aragonese Castle is a vibrant cultural and museum center, home to important permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Inside it houses:

  • The Municipal Art Gallery
Inside, it houses the famous 17th-century painting cycle of "La Gerusalemme Liberata" by Paolo Finoglio, court painter of the Guercio of Puglia. The large canvases depict epic scenes from Torquato Tasso’s poem, highlighting chivalric and spiritual virtues.
  • The Francesco Netti Art Gallery
Dedicated to the 19th-century artist from Santeramo in Colle, it offers insight into Apulian painting between realism and romanticism.
  • Temporary Exhibition Spaces
The castle often hosts national and international exhibitions, helping to make Conversano a dynamic and vibrant center also in the contemporary art scene.
