On the hills of Conversano, a solitary tower tells centuries of civilization and resilience
Just 5 kilometers from Conversano, nestled in the green heart of the Natural Reserve “Lakes of Conversano and Gravina di Monsignore”, lies the evocative Castiglione Tower: one of the most fascinating historical landmarks of the area.
A place where history meets the landscape
Perched on top of a hill, the tower is surrounded by holm oaks, downy oaks, and centuries-old olive trees, offering breathtaking views and an atmosphere that takes you back in time.
The site’s name comes from the still visible watchtower, standing 13 meters high and built between the late 15th and early 16th century for defensive purposes. The entrance, no longer accessible in its original form, was once located 5 meters above the ground and reachable only by a drawbridge — a clear indication of the building’s military function.
A past rooted in antiquity
The hill of Castiglione preserves traces of human settlements dating back to much more ancient times. Between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, in the pre-Roman era, the area was home to a fortified village, protected by a polygonal stone wall. Its strategic position and the presence of fresh water made Castiglione a landmark for local communities.
In the Middle Ages, between the 14th and 15th centuries, a new fortified village arose, with defensive walls and a church with a funerary chapel, the spiritual center of the community. Right here, during the 1998 excavations, an important burial was discovered, probably belonging to a knight, further enriching the historical value of the site.

The Tower of Castiglione is not only an archaeological site but also an ideal place for those who love nature, hiking, and walks in the quiet of the woods. The site lies along one of the most beautiful routes connecting Conversano to the Itria Valley, perfect also for cycle tourists and photographers.
Among the marked trails, visitors encounter alternating glimpses of ancient ruins and panoramic views, making each visit a complete experience, between contemplation of the past and immersion in the biodiversity of the reserve.
